Dentures act as replacements for missing teeth and are used to replace entire sets of missing teeth (complete or full denture) or a small number of teeth (partial denture). They are made from acrylic resin bonded to metal. It is possible to have dentures fitted immediately after the remaining teeth have been extracted (immediate dentures). Immediate dentures are advantageous because the patient benefits from their new teeth right away. However, it is common for patients to require adjustments after the dentures are first fitted.
Complete dentures are designed for patients who have lost all or most of their natural teeth, while partial dentures are for patients who have most of their natural teeth intact. Dentures help to restore function to the mouth, enabling people to eat normally, speak clearly and feel confident about the aesthetics of their smile. They also provide support for the cheeks and lips.
Metal-based dentures are better for long-term oral health, and we recommend plastic dentures only as a temporary measure because they tend to irritate the gums.
